About the New Zealand Top 50 Graduate Employers

Each year around 20,000 to 25,000 students graduate from tertiary education and are looking to enter the workforce and begin their professional careers. The New Zealand Top 50 Graduate Employers is designed to be an educational resource to inform students and graduates about their career industry of choice, the variety of roles available to them within that industry, insights and research from recent graduates and importantly, feature the leading employers within that industry. This is a guide to the top 50 graduate employers in New Zealand, as voted by students.

The Top 50 employers were taken from the results of a comprehensive and objective survey undertaken by Talent Solutions to canvas tertiary student opinion on graduate employers and careers in New Zealand. The results are based on questions from this survey which led to students selecting their most desired graduate employer.

In 2019, we will run the same survey, and we aim to survey current and recent graduates, to learn how they feel their employer compares as a graduate employer.

Methodology

The initial survey took place in April 2016 using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 10 questions asking respondents’ about their study backgrounds and used a filtering method of questioning to determine a single employer of choice for each respondent.

The first question had respondents’ choose from a pre determined list of 103 New Zealand employers who offer graduate programmes or graduate roles. These were listed in random order for each respondent and the respondents were asked the first of three filter questions. The selected employers by a respondents would then carry through to the next question.

The three questions used to determine a respondents single employer of choice were:

  1. Which of the following appeal to you most as a first employer? (Please select between 3 and 10 employers)

  2. Who would you most like to work for in your first graduate position? (Please select between 2 and 3 employers)

  3. Which is your first choice employer?

The results from the final question (3. Which is your first employer of choice?) determined the list of the New Zealand’s Top 50 Graduate Employers.

The pre-determined list of 103 graduate employers was pulled together by the Talent Solutions team based on comprehensive research into the New Zealand employment market determining which employers have graduate opportunities. For a company to make this list they had to either have a formal graduate programme, have structured graduate roles, or hire multiple graduates each year. Companies that had entry level roles or ad hoc graduate roles were excluded from this list.

Given the population size and with a 99 percent confidence level, the results of this survey are statistically accurate to +/- 5 percent.

56 percent of respondents were female, 44 percent male.

71 percent of respondents expected to start their first graduate role in either 2016 or 2017.
