Department of Corrections
The Department of Corrections aims to reduce re-offending by 25%. Achieving this goal will mean 600 fewer people going back to prison, 4,000 fewer people being reconvicted on community offences and most importantly 18,500 fewer victims of crime.
Corrections ensures that prisoners, parolees and other offenders in the community comply with the sentences and orders imposed by the courts and New Zealand Parole Board.
Our people are passionate about what they do. We believe that turning people away from crime is an investment worth making, not just from an economic point of view, but for the good of New Zealand society.
We focus on creating lasting change in the lives of offenders and their families by providing offenders with rehabilitation programmes, education and job training that can turn their lives around and break the cycle of re-offending.
We offer a diverse range of careers. Nationwide we have tertiary qualified staff working directly with offenders, in both community and prison-based roles.
These positions include probation officers, case managers and programme facilitators. While these aren’t graduate roles as such, we often hire graduates with degrees in criminology and psychology for these vacancies, provided they have had some relevant work experience.
We do offer graduate roles and internships for clinical psychologists and also have a Supervision to Registration Programme for programme facilitators working within Special Treatment Units in our prisons who have Graduate Diplomas in Psychology. We employ prison-based employment instructors, who will typically have a trade qualification, but also often have adult teaching qualifications.
Within National Office in Wellington, we are focused on supporting those in the field. In addition to our corporate service roles (human resources, accounting, procurement, contract management, communications, legal, etc.) we offer opportunities across a multitude of areas such as policy, service design and implementation, offender rehabilitation and reintegration and offender monitoring.
