Ministry for Primary Industries

Growing and Protecting New Zealand.

MPI is helping maximise export opportunities for our primary industries, improve sector productivity, ensure the food we produce is safe, increase sustainable resource use, and protect New Zealand from biological risk.

For many, the most visible part of MPI is the work of our frontline people at New Zealand’s international airports, ports and fisheries. This is an important part of what we do, but only one part of a much bigger picture.

We provide policy advice to support sustainable development; lead New Zealand’s Biosecurity system to protect what we produce from harmful pests and diseases; protect our international reputation as a trusted and high quality producer, through giving assurances to export markets; and protect consumers through food safety regulations.

We work in partnership with primary producers, industries and retailers, to ensure we produce the finest products. This includes: forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, meat, wool, dairy, horticulture and viticulture.

The success of our primary industries is vital to New Zealand’s well-being.
We work in partnership with the primary industries enabling them to maximise export opportunities, improve productivity and increase sustainable resource use.

Sound science and policy advice have a powerful voice in MPI and underpin many decisions. Māori fisheries and agri-business are also becoming a stronger focus.

The MPI Graduate Development Programme is an 18-month rotational programme. Successful applicants are full-time, permanent employees. Graduates complete three rotations of approximately six months each and are supported with development opportunities throughout. Rotations are predominantly Wellington-based, but with nationwide rotations encouraged.

The rotational approach enables graduates to experience a wide variety of the career opportunities that exist in MPI, e.g. as an analyst, adviser or scientist. At the end of the programme, graduates are supported to find an ongoing role that suits their interests and MPI’s needs.
