Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education’s purpose is to lift aspiration and raise educational achievement for every New Zealander. We want to see all children and students succeed personally and achieve educational success.

The Ministry of Education is the lead advisor to the Government on education: early childhood education, primary and secondary education and tertiary education. We are also the steward of the education system.

Stewardship is about making the linkages others cannot readily make. We have a clear view of the whole education system. This allows us to help ensure the different stages a learner goes through and the environments in which they learn effectively fit together to best support educational success.

We also make links between the education system and communities’ needs and to the future of New Zealand’s society and economy. We do this in our policy advice and at the front line, aiming to understand and respond to the needs of children and young people, helping them achieve. Each year, we o er opportunities for graduates to join our policy group. Graduate Policy Analysts are part of an 18-month development programme to kick-start a career in policy.

The programme includes training opportunities and rotation between policy teams and education subject areas.

Members of our Graduate Programme make valuable contributions to the Ministry’s work programme. They positively impact the community and the New Zealand economy.

They work in a range of areas including supporting policy development from early childhood to tertiary education, providing advice for Ministers that informs Government education policy, drafting speech notes, and coordinating Official Information Act responses.

They are involved in a variety of policy areas, ranging from funding policy to curriculum support; kaupapa Māori education to international education.

Most of all, our graduates have the opportunity to shape our vision
of lifting aspiration and raising educational achievement for every New Zealander.
